How To Get Started as a Digital Nomad

There is this new popular word “digital nomad” and everyone on Instagram seems to be one. Have you ever asked yourself: How do they manage to travel the world while you are stuck in your 9 to 5?

Are they all rich or what is their actual job?

There are many different ways to make online. You could, for example, make money as a…

…travel blogger

However, this market is pretty saturated and it will be hard to make actual money (so you can live from that income). Yes, you can collab with brands and restaurants but all you will get is free food or a cool bikini but no actual payment or not enough to make a living unless you already have a huge following on social media.

…e-commerce seller

If you have a product you want to sell online it’s pretty easy to create an online shop with Shopify but then you also have a lot of work offline because you need to ship the product or even create the product. Again, if you don’t have a huge social media following you will need to invest a lot of money in marketing costs to let people know about your product.

…affiliate marketing

Getting money through affiliate marketing is usually called “passive income” but it’s not so passive after all. You still have to do the initial work or pay someone to do it! Affiliate marketing is basically selling someone else’s product (this can be a physical or digital product like an online course) to get a commission. You can create a website and promote products from Amazon and if someone clicks on your link and buys the product you will get a commission.

In order for this to work, you will need amazing SEO skills, a huge Social Media following or a marketing budget to get enough traffic to your website.

…Social Media Manager

If you choose to work as a freelance social media manager you will only need a laptop, a phone, and the skills to manage accounts (which you can learn – it’s not rocket science).

I’ve put together a 5 step framework in order to get started as a freelance social media manager.

Step1

Before you even take on your very first client, organize your laptop the way you would already have clients. If you don’t have the systems you need to work with a client and suddenly get one, how will your onboarding process most likely look like? Messy, and that’s unprofessional. You want clients to have the best experience when they work with you, and that starts with the onboarding process.

Step 2

This is the most essential step! Having a personal Instagram or Facebook account is not the same thing as managing it for different businesses. You need to understand how the different Algorithms and functionalities of the biggest social media platforms work and how you can use your knowledge in order to get the best results for your clients.

Step 3

Knowing everything about the Algorithms is one part of your job; the other one is, using that knowledge for your clients in a strategic way. You should know which content should be posted on which platform and what platforms make sense for your current and potential clients.

Step 4

Often you guys ask me how you can find clients if you are never worked online before or how difficult it is to find a new client. It is actually much easier than you think. There are so many small businesses and entrepreneurs who are busy with running their own biz that they don’t have time to manage their accounts.

That’s when you step in! You can find clients pretty fast by:

  1. Asking your network: Sounds lame but I still get referrals on a regular basis so if you want to start working with clients TELL EVERYONE you know that you are ready to take on clients and tell them to tell their friends and family.

  2. Check on LinkedIn: Are you on LinkedIn? This tool is amazing to find and connect with potential clients! Just make sure that you don’t randomly add people but send them a personalized message.

  3. Find clients on Instagram: My favorite platform has so much to offer! Check the location where you live for small businesses who post and get in touch with them.

Step5

Not everyone is ready to quit their job and start doing social media full-time AND you don’t have to! The beauty about this job is that you can start it as a side hustle, while you have your full income.
